In 1880 he taught at a country school and in 1882 he entered the Illinois State Normal School, graduating in 1885. In the fall of 1888, he studied at the University of Michigan for one year. He then entered the senior class at Harvard College and graduated in 1890. On completing his university studies, he married Marie Van Velsor Rogers of Cambridge, Massachusetts and accepted the chair of history and political science at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin. He held the position at Lawrence University for two years after which he went to Boston where he delivered courses of lectures on economics and wrote a series of sociological articles for the “Arena” publication for one year. Will came to Kansas State in 1894 to become the chair of Political Economy, serving in this role for three years before becoming President in 1897. Notable during Will’s presidency was the establishment of the first on-campus bookstore and dining hall, but these services were closed after his removal as president in 1899. Kansas in the 1890s was the center of political upheaval between Populists and Republicans, and issues surrounding Populism and the free silver combination led to the removal of President Will together with several other faculty members after Republicans gained control of the Board of Regents. He devoted six years following the close of his work at Kansas State Agricultural College to emphasize the principles taught in his lectures, addresses, and papers while President, including time at Ruskin College in Trenton, Missouri, and as president of the New Socialist College in Wichita, Kansas. He became well-known in the 1930s as an advocate for the development of the Everglades in Florida, and he helped found the settlement Okeelanta in Palm Beach County, Florida. Will papers contain business correspondence, printed material, Board of Regents minutes, reports, legal documents, notes and drafts, and newspaper clippings from 1896 to 1909, some of which is connected to Will's time as president of Kansas State Agricultural College (KSAC) from 1899 to 1901. There are approximately 430 items in the collection, which is housed in one document box. The papers are divided into seven series: 1) correspondence, 2) minutes, 3) legal documents, 4) reports, 5) printed material, 6) financial records, and 7) notes and drafts.  Correspondence with Regents, KSAC executive department members, KSAC faculty and staff, and the governor of Kansas make up a large portion of the collection. Also among correspondence are letters between J. D. Walters and Will. Many of the letters deal with normal procedures at KSAC, however, some of the correspondence concerns the resignation of President Will. The series is contained in five folders.  Board of Regents minutes make up the second series and they are contained in a single folder. Among the minutes are reactions of Regents (especailly Carl Vrooman and Susan St. John) to the dismissal of President Will and other college professors. Legal documents are filed in one folder, and many of them are contracts written up by the Board of Regents for college faculty and staff. Some of the contracts are actually signed by the Regents, but many of them are blank forms. Other legal records consist of statements of college debts owed and changes within the Board of Regents.  Reports, the fourth series, concern the political controversies around populism that caused outrage in Manhattan and KSAC. The fifth series, printed material, makes up a large portion of the collection. Such items as programs and articles concerning KSAC, articles written by Will, a Kansas Supreme Court brief by G.C. Clemons, and newspaper clippings are included in this series. Financial documents include statements and expenditures concerning the treasury department of KSAC. Also included in this series are copies of the college deficits for the fiscal years 1886–1899. Notes and drafts make up the final series of this collection. Kansas in the 1890s was the center of political upheaval between Populists and Republicans, and issues surrounding Populism and the free silver combination led to the removal of President Will together with several other faculty members after Republicans gained control of the Board of Regents. He devoted six years following the close of his work at Kansas State Agricultural College to emphasize the principles taught in his lectures, addresses, and papers while President, including time at Ruskin College in Trenton, Missouri, and as president of the New Socialist College in Wichita, Kansas. He became well-known in the 1930s as an advocate for the development of the Everglades in Florida, and he helped found the settlement Okeelanta in Palm Beach County, Florida. Probably the most significant correspondence in the collection is the reports which the agents sent to the company's office in Topeka documenting the sales of the product. The graveyards are full of people who had family physicians called after they got sick. This collection consists of correspondence documenting sales of the Gavitt System Regulator. The majority of the correspondence pertains to purchasing the product, some detailing how they first received the product and giving glowing testimonials of how it helped them: \"It has cured me of a bad case of Catarrh and heart disease, and is commencing to give me strength.\" Other letters are inquiries about becoming agents for the company, explaining that either the correspondent is unaware of anyone selling their product in the area, or that the current agent is unable to continue to provide adequate service for the area.  Probably the most significant correspondence in the collection is the reports which the agents sent to the company's office in Topeka documenting the sales of the product. Many of these reports were penned on the back of the correspondence from the company, providing valuable insight into the times. The company letters include arguments for convincing the reluctant buyer to purchase their product: \"Many say they employ a family physician after they get sick. The graveyards are full of people who had family physicians called after they got sick. The time to take medicine is when the disease first makes its appearance and the only way to take it is to have it in the house handy at all times.\" The company also provides advice on marketing, suggesting that agents target parents with sons in the military: \"...we have not heard of a single case where the soldiers have had Malaria, Typhoid or Yellow fever where they had a box of our System Regulator sent to them.\"  Interspersed throughout the collection are personal letters from the Shore family and friends. These letters document the events in the lives of the family and the communities of Alma, Clay Center, Emporia and White City, Kansas, including births, deaths, and assorted gossip.  Of particular note is a letter from Jesse L. Shore to Kansas Secretary of State, George Clark, pointing out a error in the Session Laws of 1901, Chapter 420, and requesting that Mr. Clark check the actual bill to make sure it is correct. All materials are open for research.","Acquired because it documents Dr. Robert Robison McCandliss's capture and imprisonment in the notorious Libby Prison during the Civil War and enhances the department's Military History Collection.","This collection contains one item, the Robert Robison McCandliss Diary.","Born in Warren County, Ohio, Robert Robison McCandliss (1826-1908) was a Civil War surgeon who enlisted in the Union Army as a medical officer in 1862. He and his wife, nurse Priscilla McCandliss, rode with the 110th Ohio Volunteers. Captured during the Battle of Winchester, the pair were taken as prisoners.  After the Civil War, McCandliss and his family moved West. He established a medical career in Emporia, Kansas. By 1880, he owned a 9-acre farm in Lyon County. McCandliss died 5 May 1908 and was buried in Emporia's Maplewood Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Lyon County, Kansas.  November, 1826 - Robert R. McCandliss is born in Warren County, Ohio. He later graduated from Miami Medical College in Cincinnati, Ohio.  December 17, 1835 - Priscilla Youart is born in Troy, New York.  December 29, 1852 - Priscilla and Robert R. McCandliss marry in Hillgrove, Ohio.  August 25, 1862 - Dr. McCandliss enlists in the Union Army as a medical officer. McCandliss is attached to the110th Ohio Volunteers.  May, 1863 - The 110th Ohio Volunteers moves to Washington City. Priscilla accompanies Dr. McCandliss as a nurse. Over the course of the war, the McCandlisses stay at several boarding houses and roadside inns along the routes utilized by the regiment.  May 1, 1863 - Upon the resignation of Surgeon Sumner Pixley, Dr. McCandliss is raised from the position of Assistant Surgeon.  May 6, 1863 - As there were no available rooms for rent, nearby, Dr. McCandliss spend the night in the ambulance with Kife and Foster.  May 7, 1863 - The 110th Ohio Volunteers is attacked by Bushwackers who continued to harass the line for several days.  June 4, 1863 - Dr. McCandliss is present at the first death of the regiment, Samuel Thompson of Camp D, at the makeshift hospital.  June 13,1863 - The regiment is attacked by Confederate forces a mile south of Metz  June 14,1863 - The regiment retreats to the main fortification during the Second Battle of Winchester in Virginia.  June 15,1863 - During the Second Battle of Winchester, the regimental commanders orders the medical staff to elicit an evacuation of the hospital from the fortification. The evacuation is interdicted when the enemy completely encircles the Union camp. The Confederates reportedly capture 4,000 prisoners, including 100 wounded prisoners of the 110th Ohio Regiment under the care of Dr. Robert McCandliss, his staff, his wife, and the doctor himself.  June 21,1863 - The wounded prisoners are moved from the makeshift hospital to nearby York Hospital.  July 8,1863 - The doctor and his accompaniment (including Priscilla, Frank Foster and Dr. Smith) are separated from the rest of the regiment and sent to Richmond for court martial.  July 11,1863 - After marching sixty miles in captivity, the axel on the ambulance breaks. The prisoners are, subsequently, put on a train for Richmond  July 12,1863 - The prisoners arrive in Richmond at two o’clock in the morning. They are placed before the Provost Marshall for court-martial by the Confederacy. After a brief hearing, the prisoners are placed on half-ration status and divided between the region’s rebel prisons. Dr. McCandliss is ordered remanded to the notorious Libby Prison. Priscilla is remanded to Castle Thunder Prison. The remainder of the prisoners are removed to Citizen’s Prison. Two weeks later Priscilla McCandliss is paroled.  July 19, 1863 - Dr. McCandlisss attends a sermon by Ebenezer Walker Brady of the 116th Ohio Volunteers. Around this time, the doctor assumes the duty of medical care for prisoners at Libby Prison.  August 1, 1863 - Rumors circulate that a prisoner exchange will take place the following week. The exchange does not materialize.  August 2 ,1863 - Dr. McCandliss is given extraordinary latitude of sitting on the rooftop of the prison, watching the activities of the James Cotton Mills and a procession of gunboats sailing the James River.  August 5, 1863 - Dr. Meaher and Henry Milles are noted as arriving at the prison from Winchester, Virginia. The evacuation is interdicted when the enemy completely encircles the Union camp. The Confederates reportedly capture 4,000 prisoners, including 100 wounded prisoners of the 110th Ohio Regiment under the care of Dr. Robert McCandliss, his staff, his wife, and the doctor himself.  June 21,1863 - The wounded prisoners are moved from the makeshift hospital to nearby York Hospital. Previously, courses on the subject had been taught as early as 1865 by Benjamin F. Mudge. From 1877 to 1883, entomology was taught as part of Botany and Horticulture. In 1897, Horticulture and Entomology were consolidated, but in the 1894 catalog, Entomology was listed as a separate subdepartment. After being officially established, Entomology remained in Arts and Sciences until July 1, 1953, when it was transferred to Agriculture. Administrators of Entomology include Mudge (1865-1873), J. S. Whitman (1873-1876), E. A. Popenoe (1879-1897, 1899-1907), Ernest E. Faville (1897-1898), and Thomas J. Headlee (1907-1912). Subsequent heads of Entomology were George A. Dean (1912-1943), Roger C. Smith (1943-1953), Herbert Knutson (1953-1976), Richard J. Sauer (1976-1980), Robert G. Helgesen (1980-1989), C. The department’s facilities include 22 greenhouses and laboratories that feature bioclimatic chambers and rearing rooms. Field research for the department is conducted at branch experiment stations throughout the state of Kansas.
